How Can I Tell If My Drains Need To Be Cleaned?

When you turn your faucet on to clean dishes, rinse vegetables or brush your teeth, you expect the water to flow freely down the drain, right? When take a shower or bath after a long day at work, you expect the water to flow freely down the drain, right? When you do a load of laundry, you expect the drum to empty and the water to drain freely, right? Well, we’ve all been in a situation where these weren’t the results and things didn’t “flow freely.” So, why does that happen and how you can prevent clogged drains from happening in the first place? Find out below!

What Causes Clogged Drains?

As we go about our days, bathing, cleaning, rinsing and washing, our drains take somewhat of a beating. Sure, they’re meant to handle lots of water as they do their job carrying it from your sink, shower or bathtub out of the house. But when everyday items like dirt, hair, skin cells and food scraps make their way down the pipe, clogs can form as a result.

The problem is, it’s difficult to tell when a drain clog is going to arise, as they tend to happen without much notice. Not to mention, there’s never a good time for a backed up line or a clogged pipe, so how can you tell when your drains need to be cleaned out?

Signs You Need Your Drains Cleaned

  1. Slow Drains - if you start noticing that water is taking longer than normal to flow out of the sink, shower or tub, there’s a good chance the drain isn’t completely clear. There may be something building up in the pipe.

  2. Strange Smells - notice foul odors coming from your plumbing fixtures? Those bad smells usually stem from either sewer gases being released into your home or from waste sitting in the drain. Either way, you should have your fixtures looked at right away, before things get worse.

  3. Gurgling Sounds - those gurgling noises you’re hearing in the drain are usually a direct result of an issue with air circulation. Drains do in fact, need air to operate and if there’s any issue with airflow you could be left with a serious plumbing issue.

  4. Standing Water - does water just seem to sit in the sink or in the tub well after you shut off the faucet? This is a clear indication there’s some sort of backup in the drain line and it could eventually cause water to back up into your home.

  5. Sink Bubbles - seeing bubbles in the sink even if you’re not using soap to wash your hands? If so, there’s a good chance your drain isn’t quite as clear as it should be. Normally, soap in the sink is an indication of squeaky clean hands, but not in this scenario.

Don’t put that drain cleaning off any longer! If you notice any of the above warning signs, it’s important to call in a professional right away. After all, things can quickly go south if you fail to perform regular maintenance and you neglect your home’s plumbing system for too long!
