Air Conditioning Installation: Why Size Matters

When beginning to shop for a new air conditioning system, you may be tempted to choose the biggest one you can afford. A common misconception is that the actual size of your system doesn’t matter as long as everything else you need is in alignment.

The fact of the matter is that the size of your air conditioner actually matters a lot. This is the one factor that determines whether or not it will be able to properly cool down the home in which it’s installed. Your AC can experience issues whether it’s oversized or undersized, which we discuss below.

When Your AC Is Too Big

The way your AC system is designed, it’s intended to give a certain amount of output over a particular period of time. The functionality of your air conditioner is dependent on this cycle. If it’s too large, the thermostat shuts the system down before it can complete a full cycle—a process called short-cycling.

Short-cycling makes air conditioners far less efficient at cooling homes. Additionally, this process increases the wear and tear on AC systems dramatically. As a result, an oversized air conditioner will experience more problems and very likely have a drastically shorter lifespan that it otherwise would have.

When Your AC Is Too Small

Undersized air conditioners can have just as many problems as their oversized counterparts. If your AC unit is too small, it simply won’t be able to cool your home completely or efficiently. It will also stay on for longer periods of time to compensate for never reaching the cooling temperature you desire.

Similar to short-cycling, this process will decrease system efficiency, increase wear and tear, and cause a shorter lifespan. Therefore, you’ll want to ensure that your air conditioner is properly sized upon installation. Otherwise you’ll find yourself replacing your air conditioner far sooner than you expected.
