5 Fabulous Fall Flowers
Autumn is fast approaching and with it, the chill of winter. But you don’t have to let your garden go just yet…these flowers blossom throughout the fall season so you’ll keep these bright blooms well into the cooler months.
Flowers That Bloom In Autumn
Dianthus
This genus of flower accounts for over 300 individual species–most are some shade of pink. This flower is famous for it’s strong, spicy fragrance. Make sure to plant this flower early on in the fall as it’s unlikely to last through the first frost of the season.
Hardiness zones: 3-9
Fun fact: It’s rumored that the color pink was actually named after this flower!
Toad lily
These unique flowers thrive in shady gardens but can tolerate partial sun if watered regularly. The flowers bloom from September through October and can grow up to 3 feet tall–you won’t miss this beauty in any fall garden!
Hardiness zones: 4-9
Fun fact: Toad lilies are a recent introduction to North America—this East Asian-native plant was only introduced in ornamental gardens in the mid-90s!
Oakleaf hydrangea
This gorgeous flower will do best in a sunny area that receives slight afternoon shade. During the summer months, the flower will boast green leaves with delicate white flowers but come autumn, the leaves can change to a bright red, orange, or yellow!
Hardiness zones: 5-9
Fun fact: The Oakleaf is one of the only species of hydrangea that are native to the United States!
Chrysanthemum
One of the more common choices for autumn flowers, the chrysanthemum will bloom perennially if given a few weeks to establish roots. Once established, these bright flowers will add some color to any part of your garden or home!
Hardiness zones: 5-9
Fun fact: According to the National Chrysanthemum Society, chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China back in the 15th century BC!
Aster
Asters are a good source of color and life for your garden—their nectar will attract hungry bees and butterflies before the cooler months. Bonus: this flower is the birth flower for those born in the month of September!
Hardiness zones: 3-8
Fun fact: The ‘Aster Revolution’ (or the Hungarian Revolution of October 31, 1918) was named after protestors wore this flower in Budapest!
