Your air filter that comes standard with your HVAC system is there to protect its inside components from dirt, dust, and other debris that can obstruct airflow and make it harder for your system to do its job. Dirty air filters can also lead to problems with iced over coils and damaged AC components. But how often should you change your air filter? The short answer is—it depends. What Type of Air Filter Do You Have?
Permanent Filter: We actually advise against this type of air filter as it can develop mold and mildew and negatively impact not only your HVAC system but also your health. However if that’s what you have on hand, then you of course would not be changing it. Instead, you should be thoroughly cleaning it every 2 months, or more often if you have significant contaminants in your air.
Panel Filter: These are a simple form of air filter that do a decent job of filtering the air. And they are fairly inexpensive. You can go to pretty much any local hardware store and purchase a pack of these air filters, though they typically do need to be changed once a month.
Pleated Filter: This type of filter is made from a polyester weave and is more efficient than its panel filter counterpart at straining out unwanted particles. They do cost more, however they can typically last 3-6 months before they need to be changed. Do make sure, however, that your air filters aren’t too efficient as doing so can put a strain on your system’s airflow.
