How to Compost at Home

Compost is a natural fertilizer made from organic materials like unused portions of food and yard waste. According to the EPA, food scraps and yard waste make up approximately 30% of household waste. Reusing this waste is a natural way to improve your garden and save your garbage disposal and plumbing from wear and tear.

What do I need to compost?

Compost requires some basic ingredients and equipment:

  • Brown matter – Yard waste such as twigs, dead leaves, etc.
  • Green matter – Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, lawn clippings.
  • Water – Helps the composting process by encouraging the growth of natural bacteria and fungi to break down organic materials.
  • Time – Organic material takes time to break down. Compost should be ready for use in two to five weeks.
  • Composting bin – Something to hold your compost in as it breaks down. You can create your own or purchase one for indoor use.

What can I compost?

Compost needs equal layers of brown and green matter in order to breakdown properly–brown materials create carbon, green materials create nitrogen, and water adds moisture needed to break the materials down.

Brown Matter vs. Green Matter

Brown matter that can be composted includes:

  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Shredded newspaper
  • Leaves
  • Sawdust
  • Twigs and branches
  • Dryer and vacuum cleaner lint
  • Wood chips
  • Hair and fur

Alternate layers of brown matter with layers of green matter such as:

  • Eggshells
  • Coffee grounds and filters
  • Teabags
  • Banana peels
  • Celery hearts
  • Fruit pits

Waste items such as pet waste, dairy products, animal meat and bones, fats, oils, and grease should NOT go into your compost as these items attract pests.
