Types of Contaminants That May Lurk in Your Water Supply

If you rely on well water for your family’s drinking and washing needs, you are responsible for having it treated and tested. If you get your water from the city’s supply, water is treated before it reaches your home. In either case, however, contamination may still occur.

Common Contaminants and How They Get There

There are many contaminants that could exist in your water supply, whether you are a private well owner or not. These include the following:

  • Pesticides
  • Arsenic
  • Radon
  • Calcium
  • Nitrates
  • Chloride

Some of these are harmful to drink. Others, like calcium, affect the pipes. Others can even have effects on your skin as you are showering. So how do these get to your fixtures?

Municipal water treatment may miss some contaminants, or additional contaminants may collect in the pipes as the water reaches your home. And some people are sensitive to the chemicals used in conventional water treatment methods. With well water, ground contamination can take place even in undeveloped areas that seem isolated from chemicals and other types of manmade pollution.

Our Recommendations for All Homeowners

We recommend that every homeowner has their water tested at least once and that well owners continue testing once a year. All private well owners should have some forms of water treatment in place. For others, a reverse osmosis system, water softener, or whole-home filter is highly recommended. After testing, your technician should be able to help you come up with a solution to whatever problems have an impact on your water supply.

The plumbers at Advanced Home Services go through continued training on municipal supplied water treatment methods along with private well water treatment methods that have to deal softening, conditioning, and different filtration methods. Call us today to get your water tested and treated in Idaho Falls, ID.
