Why Isn't My Heat Turning On?
What to Do if Your Heater Isn’t Cycling On
Picture this: you wake up one morning, but not because your alarm is going off. Instead, you wake up because your teeth are chattering and your comforter just isn’t doing the trick. Your bedroom is freezing cold, but how can this be? You remember taking a look at the thermostat before heading to bed and everything looked fine. What could possibly be the problem?
While there are a number of different factors that can affect your comfort during the winter, the quality of the heater is one of the most pressing. But heaters break down. No matter how well you maintain yours over the years, there will nevertheless come a time when you have to bring in a pro to restore your heater with heating repair. We can make sure it’s done correctly.
There are generally a few main reasons why your heating system won’t turn on. In most cases, it’s due to a problem with the thermostat, but there could also be issues with the circuit breaker or pilot light (if you have a gas furnace). See below to find out what you can do to troubleshoot the problem.
5-Step Heater Troubleshooting
Step 1: Check your thermostat. Head over to the thermostat and double check that it’s set to “heat.” If your thermostat controls both your heating and cooling system, somebody may have switched it to “cool” or “off.”
Step 2: Check your electrical panel. It’s not uncommon for the circuit to trip or a fuse to blow and that can cause the system to fail to kick on. Be sure to check the main electrical panel as well as any secondary panels you might have throughout your home. Make sure the furnace’s power switch is turned on. You can usually find the switch in or near the furnace cabinet.
Step 3: Reset your furnace. There could be a problem with the furnace’s motor, and it may need to be reset. Sometimes when the motor takes on extra stress, it can actually overload and shut down to prevent serious damage. There should be a reset button near the motor’s housing – press it and wait about a half hour for the motor to cool down.
Step 4: Check for a blown fuse. Turn off the power to the furnace at the main electrical panel or secondary panel. Check the owner’s manual for instructions on how to replace a blown fuse and if that sounds like too hefty of a task, give a professional repair technician a call.
Step 5: Check the pilot light. If you have a gas furnace, check to make sure the pilot light is lit. You may need to re-ignite the flame or open up the gas valve to allow an adequate amount of fuel to be sent to the system.
