When most people hear the word furnace, they understandably think of a combustion heating system. But today’s homeowners have a choice when it comes to furnaces, and you can choose to have a furnace that doesn’t generate heat via combustion, but instead uses electricity.

Electric furnaces have come a long way over the last few years, and can offer homeowners some benefits they may not get with combustion systems, including high energy efficiency. But just because these systems don’t use a flammable fuel doesn’t mean that just anyone can install, repair, replace or maintain them. Electric furnaces use a large amount of electricity to operate, and expert knowledge of electricity and furnaces is required to safely handle any kind of work done on an electric furnace.

This is where the heating experts at Advanced Home Services come in. How Does an Electric Furnace Work?

Like gas furnaces, electric furnaces are queued to start the heating process by your home’s thermostat. But instead of igniting a burner, a number of tightly–wound metal coils are electrified in a sequence until they are red hot; the component that holds these coils is known as the heating element. The coils heat in a sequence so as not to overload your home’s electrical system, and once they are all electrified and generate the right amount of heat, the furnace’s blower turns on. This large fan blows the heated air through your home’s ductwork and into your living spaces. Once the air in your home reaches the temperature set on the thermostat, the cycle shuts down and your home is warm and comfortable.

Why Consider an Electric Furnace?

One reason homeowners may want to consider an electric furnace is that they don’t have ready access to a natural gas line; another reason is that some homeowners simply don’t want to use a fossil fuel to heat their home. Electric furnaces have very high efficiency ratings, some as high as 100%, because they don’t lose any fuel energy to combustion byproducts, and they also have a longer lifespan, averaging between 20–30 years versus a combustion furnace, which typically averages 15–20 years. No matter your reason for installing an electric furnace, know that the experts at Advanced Home Services are here to help you with the installation, repair, and maintenance of your system for as long as you have it.
