4 Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes

When your pipes freeze, you lose the ability to use some of the faucets in your home. But this certainly isn’t the worst consequence of a frozen water pipe. Since water expands when it freezes, the pipe can expand too, no matter how durable the material. And when it does, the pipes can burst, sending water gushing into your home and costing you a lot of money repairing the pipes and any resulting water damage. We’re experts on preventing such costly damages (just check out our local news appearance!). Here’s how you can protect your pipes.

  • The first step is to wrap up your exposed pipes. We recommend a material known as heat tape. Then, cover the piping with an insulation material. This warms up the pipes and thaws them out, and it also prevents them from freezing in the first place.
  • You should also be sure to disconnect your sprinkler system in order to winterize your outdoor plumbing components. Take down any hoses and shut off the water to the outdoors. Leave faucets on to drain any water remaining in the fixture and keep the tap open. Shut own the sprinkler system controller, remove the backflow preventer, and get all of the water out of the sprinklers; you may need a plumber’s help with this process.
  • Keep the heat on in your home, even when you are away for a couple of days, and set it to no less than 55°F. Make sure your heater is in good working order, and consider a maintenance visit if you plan to be away for long.
  • Open up the doors within your home on very cold days in order to allow the heat to reach all of the locations it needs to. This means you may want to open up cabinets so that the heat can reach underneath the sink.
